Encore U.S. Blues
Notes
Digitally remastered using a custom built, Dual-DAW, nicknamed Bertha, by jashley@deadacated.com. Completed on August 19, 2004.
The source has lost much of its frequency range over the years. I would have suspected the master reel lineage if I did not know where it came from. Hopefully, some life has been brought back to this wonderful set of music.
(*)Encore is from the Bertha Remaster of the Bertrando/Menke AUD source.

Most overrated of the run?
This is pretty strong outing from the epic 6 night Orpheum run. The Scarlet in set 1 is nice, but the feature is the big Playin sandwich in set 2, which
...
gets to some different places. Playin goes “type 2” around 7-8 mins. in with an interesting jam that has hints of Stronger Than Dirt (though no direct relationship). The Spanish jam is well done, starting of in a soft minimalist mode (the boys even tune up for a while in the background!) but gradually building in intensity. The highlight of the jam for me was the dynamite transition from the Wheel to Playin, where they are briefly playing both songs at once! That said, there’s a certain something or “x-factor” missing from much of this big set two jam I can’t quite put my finger on. Basically, I think it looks a little better on paper than it actually sounds. Nothing from this show can really quite touch the dynamite segments from 7/17 and 7/18, or even the better moments of 7/12 and 7/14, imo (try the Playin sandwich from 7/14, for example, to see where they can really take this song).
Who cares about a box set? Great run, I love all 6 nights, especially the first night and these last 3. Great work as always on the transfer. And I
...
agree with the folks below, definitely a jam in 7/4 but I wouldn't go so far as to call it stronger than dirt..I remember back in the mid-'80's people would also often label the jam out of Eyes in '73-'74 as stronger than dirt..it was a misused, generic term for jams in this signature. Fantastic jams many of them, but to me Stronger than Dirt is what was recorded and done at the '75 shows.

A very well played Playing>jam>Cosmic Charlie at this concert. Chalk another one up for the Orpheum.

I don't hear "Stronger Than Dirt" either. However even though it resembles "STD" I would still label it as "jam". By the way how come this run of 6 shows
...
hasn't been released as a box set? It has GREAT song selections, inspired jamming & ALL nights are available as a SB. The folks at Rhino should carefully scrutinize this run as possible release material. Does anyone else agree?

stronger than fiction..
sedula-you are correct, this is what i whould call a near miss at"Stronger", Phil seems to want to steer it that way, as the get in the key of A minor
...
from the D minor "playin" jam you can plainly hear Phil try to put his 7/4 riff over/into the mix but no one else jumps at it-Jer seems to tinker around it with some signature licks from those '75 versions, but I agree this is a "jam", not "Stronger than dirt"...great jam though!
